Make a Paper Milkweed Wisp
Teaching Resource: Arts & Crafts
Today we will be making a little milkweed seedling (aka a wisp) from the book series, TALES OF WHIMSY by J.H. Winter (2nd Editions of WISHWEAVER (Book 1) and THE WAYWARD WIND (Book 2) out Fall 2025!). In this story, Flit, is a milkweed wisp and the best friend of the main character (protagonist), an orb weaver named Whimsy.
Wisps are also the holders of a Wishweaver’s wish magic, and to illustrate that point, we’ll be making our own little wisps that can optionally be hung in your room or classroom, and can even be holding your child or student’s own secret wish!
Here’s what you’re going to need:
White Yarn
Paper to print the Seed Head PDF
Orange/Yellow colored pencils, pens, crayons, paints, etc. Your choice!
Scissors
Glue Stick
Liquid Glue
Optional: String or Fishing Line to hang seed heads
Optional: Extra paper for adding child’s (or student’s) wishes to that can be hung or glued to the wisp to hold
Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial to Make Paper Flit:
Next, print the Seed Head PDF and color it using your coloring supplies. Make sure to color one head facing either direction. Then cut out the seed heads, and using your glue stick, glue them together with the colored sides facing out.
Place a drop of liquid glue at the very top of the skirt.
Place the base of the seed head into it, holding the yarn around the bottom edge of the skirt
for a minute to help set the glue.
Your Paper Wisp is done!!
You can now optionally tie some fishing line or thread to the top either from part of the skirt or by poking a hole through the seed head and tethering the string to that in order to hang these little guys from your room or classroom!
You can also do the same underneath so that each wisp can hold your child or student’s written wish. Have fun with this and don’t forget to share what you make with me by tagging me @frizzybeebooks! I can’t wait to see all of your Wishes in the Wind!
